Description

We provide services in trust-based horsemanship - colt starting (breaking in), problem solving, basic western riding technique, and much more, with an emphasis on techniques and principles from the Vaquero bridle horse tradition. There are also opportunities for better understanding of your horse and increasing safety and enjoyment in our specialized clinics and lessons that include improving all forms of communication, basic/advanced groundwork skills, colt starting, ranch roping, stockmanship/cattlework and leadership/management correlations, among others. Learning to interact and ride with feel, timing and balance is the main goal of lessons and clinics.

Our Escorted Ranch Tours are an amazing way to experience the Western way of life with a native - join us in Montana or Wyoming to live firsthand the traditions, horsemanship, cuisine, music, history, art, scenery, and culture of the West!

We are passionate about working with horses and their people and are now splitting our time between New Zealand and Colorado, near where Ben grew up. Be sure to check out our website for more information, history and philosophy.

A bit about Ben:

Ben Longwell has worked with some of the greatest horsemen in the West, adding to a lifetime of practical equine experience. He is influenced from the methods of such horseman as Tom & Bill Dorrance, Ray Hunt, Richard Caldwell, Martin Black, Buck Brannaman, Dave Weaver and others.

Ben and his wife Natalie moved to her native country of New Zealand and took the opportunity to build a training and clinic business. Since being in New Zealand, Ben has been privileged to be a returning Clinician at Equidays (NZ's national horse expo) six different years giving well-received clinics ranging from Colt Starting and Vaquero Horsemanship to Problem Solving and Green Horse Clinics.

In addition to colt starting and problem solving at home, Ben teaches various Clinics around the country and participants love his knowledgeable and quiet approach to teaching them. Where leaving egos behind and focusing on the horse results in true progress and a great learning environment.

Well that’s a wrap!! We had a fantastic day with a huge turnout at our Nearly Free Clinic, collecting food items for those affected by lockdown in exchange for a day of Horsemanship demonstrations! Big THANKS to all who have donated food and to our volunteers helping make it work today. Also, to 12 Oaks Equestrian for the awesome venue and helping with logistics!
.
.
As the events of the last few months unfolded, we asked ourselves what we could do to help people. Just working their horses doesn’t help people struggling to put food on the table. So we decided to leverage what we could do by having YOU bring the food! We are excited to get this huge pile packaged up to families in need in our community!

Hi Ben, best thing I did was attend your clinic in Taranaki earlier this year with my young boy Apache... we taking it slowly but he is going well😀

I have encountered this very issue (with people) many times over the years. It's so tempting to try to help them find an easier way of managing their horses, but I have discovered that unsolicited advice is rarely appreciated 🤦‍♀️. Boy is it hard to watch the struggle (and keep my mouth shut 🤭) though. I am blessed with a very generous, and agreeable chestnut mare, that I would have to say just never gives me any troubles, so I was rather surprised, a few weeks back, when she wouldn't do what I was asking..... .....i had harnessed her up, and hooked up the cart, popped my dog in the cart, and climbed aboard. I got myself seated, and gathered my reins, and asked Shilo to 'back up'. She backed a step, and no more. I repeated my request for her to back up (away from the fence). Nothing happened 🤷‍♀️. This was most peculiar. I asked her again.... nope, she stood firm, so I got down to see if she was ok, because surely she must be unwell to be defying my requests. Ummm, someone forgot to untie her from the fence 🤦‍♀️😅

I have been around horses for sixty years now, and am still learning! I enjoy your Thoughtful Thursdays! :-)

Great topics today guys 👍🏻

So true. I’ve been on this Horsemanship journey now for a couple of years, wish I had known 30 years ago what I’m learning now!

Love it! When the student is ready the teacher will appear. I'm in Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia :)

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Best to try to lead by example. I find I am increasingly intolerant of people with egos who insist on giving their opinions and never once ask a question.

I often get the comment " You're lucky to have such a quite horse", people think it comes naturally or though luck, not the way I handle and train my horses lol!

I'm from Gloucester N.S.W Australia

My Arab x she’s 25 now and had been pushed from pillow to post...a very sensitive soul and took a good 12mnths to build trust with her on the ground....now she’s vocal at the gate and if she can is the first there unless my other beats her to it lol

Abbie Mcleod

I look forward to seeing more of Breeze. Hopefully I can follow the posts... I'm not 9n long enough to catch everything, but that's a good thing too 😀

Interested in what you do with her to help her 😊

Will you be filming your training lessons with her and will they be available on your subscription service?

Criss or Cross lol

Love my sharp Arabs. Quickest horses to let you know if you have it right or wrong. So much finesse required to earn their trust but what amazing animals when you have it. Especially love them when they have a little person to look after and teach. A shame that they are branded as crazy Arabs.

Love working with Arabs so sharp such good brains keep you on your A Game

“Thanks to Ben for coming to Taranaki and bringing your Green Horse clinic here. Each owner and their horse received a half hour one on one session with Ben facilitating better communication each morning and afternoon. Your patient and easy to understand narrative while you were working made each session so interesting and informative for the whole group. You are rare in that you communicate with people as well as you do with horses!”
