Day 1 Our journey starts at our stables at High Country Horses. After a meet and greet with the team, we’ll get you all packed up and ready for your week in the backcountry. Once your bags are packed we’ll allocate you your horse for the week and allow you to take them for a bit of a play in the arena to connect & get acquainted. From here we set out and follow the Rees River up through multiple river crossings and along a winding stock track dubbed “the rollercoaster” by guides, traversing an ancient virgin beech forest before revealing the hidden backcountry valley and hanging glaciers that will be our home for the next two nights. Our campsite is situated right next to an historic musterers hut nestled against a small glacial waterfall.

After untacking the horses and settling into camp, we’ll have afternoon tea beside the creek, followed by an evening of fun and games around the campfire.

Day 2 Today is all about having fun and exploration. Flanked by snowcapped mountains, we retrace the Rees River all the way up to it’s Glacial Source as we match the ebb and flow of the River with canter, trot, walk and gallop. As we meander along the wide open valley, there are plenty of opportunities to try your hand at jumping the driftwood scattered along the river bed, or simply relax and take in the pristine New Zealand back country.

Lunch is at the mouth of a glacial creek, with the blue ice of the glacial source visible above. Here, surrounded by ancient beech trees and their mossy undercover you’ll have the opportunity to untack and swim your horse in the aqua blue crystal clear water. After sunning dry and eating some lunch, we head down the valley with a few more opportunities for canters through the fields to have afternoon tea at the base of an 80m waterfall, here there is an optional nature hike for the daring that takes you right up to the pool beneath the falls. On our way home, we have a couple of awesome secret spots that we can’t wait to show you 🙂

After a day of adventuring on horseback, we arrive back at camp for an evening full of stories and entertainment around the campfire and under the stars.

Day 3 After bidding farewell to our campsite, we start our day by riding through the movie set for ‘Mission Impossible 6’. Following this, you’ll have the opportunity to really let your horse loose on the perfect hill for a gallop reaching a stunning vantage point of the valley below. From here we negotiate between boulders through a large glacial alluvial fan (used as a location for ‘walking with dinosaurs’) before weaving our way through the ups and downs of the native beech forest once again to have lunch at the base of ‘Lovers Leap’. After lunch, we follow a narrow stock track along the foothill of Mt Earnslaw through to Diamond Lake and finally into the historic homestead of Paradise where we’ll be spending our evening in the lap of luxury. After a hearty roast meal we’ll have the opportunity for a short nature walk to see some of New Zealand’s glow worms light up the forest walls in a spectacular light show.

Day 4 Our last day on our ride sees us depart from paradise homestead and ride through towering red Beech trees as we show you a number of filming locations from The Lord Of The Rings as well as an old schelite mine. From here, we ascend a lone standing mount Alfred through the ferns and cabbage trees and are rewarded with my personal favourite view in the world of the Dart Valley unfolding beneath us. This is the location used for Isengard in TLOTR as well as the opening scene in Prince Caspian. As we descend down off of Alfred we have a long, wide open field perfect for a few longer canters beside the dart river.

"Well guys & gals, all I can say is that my hubby will be very dissapointed when I tell him that THIS was my favourite holiday of all time... and it was without him! As a very uneducated & fairly conservative rider, I went into this journey with some trepidation & Nerves. However, this ride has pushed my comfort zone in the safest and funnest way possible. It has been a real confidence builder. The scenery & adventure is like nothing I have ever seen before and the package left absolutely nothing to want for. The horses were delightful, but most importantly, Jess & Bijmin were the perfect guides that made the ride extra special. They were kind, passionate, throughtful and friendly - I know that I made 12 new friends this week. Thank you for the experience of a lifetime!

You've got questions?

We've got answers

You will be sent a full packing list upon booking but in a nutshell:

We recommend at least 2 pairs of riding pants, a broken in pair of riding boots, a couple of lightweight long sleeve shirts (to keep the sun at bay), a buff to cover your neck, a few extra pairs of socks incase your feet get wet and a warm jacket.

You will also need to bring with you, your favourite drink of choice! Unfortunately we do not have a liquor license but BYO is fine.

Some of the most important things you can bring with you to ensure you have a great time are a sense of adventure and a willingness to give some of the incredible once in a lifetime experiences a go 🙂

New Zealand’s weather can be very fickle with 4 seasons in a single day. ’round here we say that if you don’t like the weather, all you have to do is wait 30 minutes 😉 Unfortunately this makes it very hard to predict, so we like to ensure that we’re prepared for whatever the weather gods might throw at us.

With this in mind, we recommend ensuring that you have a few warm layers with you, a light weight rain jacket / wind stopper (we will provide you with an oilskin if it really starts to rain), a warm jacket, gloves and a buff / scarf.  As well as a change of dry clothes for camp.

If it does look like the skies are going to open up, we will provide you with a heavy duty oilskin riding coat as well as selection of gumboots to keep your feet dry.

Even if you’re not much of a camper, our campsite at Arthurs creek has all the necessities to keep you comfortable out in the back country whilst immersing you in the incredible natural surroundings.

Whilst we will be tenting, your bed for the night will be inside a specially made canvas military style tent, equipped with mosquito netting to keep the bugs at bay and on a comfortable stretcher and swag.

There is an eco toilet that features one of the world’s best dunny views. A hot gas powered shower, a super refreshing natural glacial waterfall shower, a fully equipped kitchen, camp table, bean bags and more.

Whilst there is no electricity for the first 2 nights of our trip, we do have a number of portable battery packs to keep your phone fully charged.

Helmets are a legal requirement for all guests on the ride and an important component to our safety policy. Even the guides and owners will be wearing their helmets on the trail.

We do have a wide selection of helmets available at our stable so if you don’t have one, or would prefer to travel light we can certainly find one that fits you snuggly.

Our meals always offer a variety of food that usually cover all the bases for a number dietary preferences. That being said, if you have any health related dietary requirements / allergies we can also substitute our menu to cater for:

Gluten Free / Dairy Free / Vegetarian meals.

To get the most out of this experience we recommend that you are comfortable trotting and cantering over uneven terrain.

This doesn’t mean you’ll have to go fast all the time though, we usually have a few seperate groups that form based on their preferred speed throughout the ride: from the leisurely walkers that enjoy taking in the scenery to the hooligans that enjoy the feeling of the wind through their hair.

We will however be riding for around 5-6 hours every day so a relative level of riding fitness is required to help keep you balanced on your horse and to avoid the John Wayne saddle sore swagger.

In truth we use a combination of saddles from English to Western and even a few Australian stock saddles.

All of our horses are professionally fitted with their own personal saddle. Most of the saddles we ride in are High Quality Argentinian english saddles. Where possible we can try and accommodate a special request for a type of tack, but more often than not this will affect which horse you end up riding.

The authentic love and passion that Deana and her team at High Country has for the area and for sharing these natural places on horseback shines through in everything they do and the products they deliver!

We would like to give a HUGE shout out and thank you to Deana Insley and the whole team at High Country Horses for their unwavering support and encouragement every step of the way. From the moment Deana heard about our ambition to ride the length of New Zealand nearly 3 years ago, she has been 100% behind us, always encouraging us to follow our dreams and make them a reality. Giving both Jess, myself & our 4 wild ponies a home and a lifestyle that many can only dream of.
